Mayor Rawlings-Blake Announces $1 million Grant To Sustain City’s Public Health Campaign To Reduce Infant Mortality

May 9, 2012 – Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced a $1 million renewal grant to the Health Department and Family League of Baltimore City from CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst), to sustain the City’s B’more for Healthy Babies campaign helping to reduce infant mortality. The award, approved by the Board of Estimates, builds on CareFirst’s initial $3 million grant, extending the program through 2013. To read more click here

Healthy Families America Home Visiting RFP

The Family League of Baltimore City (FLBC) and the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) are working to improve the efficiency of the operation and management of Home Visiting Programs (HVPs), a critical component of the B’more for Healthy Babies (BHB) initiative.  Through this RFP, we are seeking to fund HVPs that have implemented the Healthy Families America® model and will partner with other HVPs in this comprehensive strategy to improve birth outcomes.  We will not fund HVPs operating outside of the Healthy Families America model through this application. Healthy Mother, Healthy Baby

The department, partnering with the Family League of Baltimore City, has launched a campaign called “B’more for Healthy Babies” that’s hoping to improve family health. One challenge is that 40 percent of women of child-bearing age in Baltimore are obese, and obesity leads to problems for moms and for children. To read more click here

Baltimore City Dept. of Social Services is recruiting Foster Parents

BCDSS is constantly recruiting new foster parents as part of their Foster Care Program. Over the past few years it has become increasingly important to generate interest among families who will consider fostering teenagers. After-School Programs’ Newest Activity: Supper

At some schools and community centers across the country, baked chicken, steamed broccoli, apple slices, whole-wheat rolls, and milk are on the menu—but not just at lunch. Across Maryland, which began serving USDA-funded suppers in 2009, more than 10,000 meals are served every evening. A majority of those are provided in Baltimore in coordination with The Family League of Baltimore City which caterers about 200 sites throughout the city, including 81 schools. B’More fit for Healthy Babies kick-off event for the free weight loss program

Baltimore mothers can lose weight, be more active, build healthier eating and cooking habits, and improve their personal and families’ overall health with the new B’more Fit for Healthy Babies program. This free program, a joint project between the Baltimore City Health Department and the Family League of Baltimore, will begin registering eligible women at an event on Saturday, Jan. 14.
